I. Course Description

General Chemistry II is a continuation of General Chemistry I. We will cover the following topics:

Ch. 15 - Organic Compounds and the Atomic Properties of Carbon
Ch. 16 - Kinetics: Rates and Mechanism of Chemical Reactions
Ch. 17 - Equilibrium: The Extent of Chemical Reactions
Ch. 18 - Acid-Base Equilibria
Ch. 19 - Ionic Equilibria in Aqueous Systems
Ch. 20 - Thermodynamics: Entropy, Free Energy, and the Direction of Chemical Reactions
Ch. 21 - Electrochemistry: Chemical Change and Electrical Work
Ch. 23 - The Transition Elements and Their Coordination Compounds
Ch. 24 - Nuclear Reactions and Their Applications

If time permits, we will also cover Ch. 22 and perhaps Ch. 14.

II. Textbook

Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change by Martin S. Silberberg, 5th Edition.

The course will be taught the same way as for General Chemistry I. Syllabus will be provided before the first day of classes by e-mails. The evaluation will include 3 exams. Attendance will be considered in the determination of final grade.
