一、 課程說明:
本課程主要介紹三位美國古典實用主義哲學家—裴爾士 (Charles Peirce, 1839- 1914)、詹姆士 (William James, 1842-1910) 以及杜威 (John Dewey, 1859-1952)—的哲學思想,並且擇要介紹他們的思想在當代哲學中的討論與發展。除了閱讀這三位哲學家的原典文章之外,也將探討許多當代作者對於他們的哲學論點的詮釋、發展與批評,包括哈克 (Susan Haack)、米薩克 (Cheryl Misak)、帕特南 (Hilary Putnam) 與薛弗勒 (Israel Scheffler) 等人。
本課程由三個單元所組成。單元(A)介紹這三位哲學家的「真理」觀與「實在」觀,由於裴爾士與詹姆士最初是應用實用主義方法來闡釋「真理」與「實在」之意義,因此這單元是介紹實用主義時所不可或缺的。單元(B)介紹裴爾士與杜威的科學哲學、以及裴爾士的科學形上學 (scientific metaphysics) 中的重要主張。單元(C)介紹目前仍受到不少注意之詹姆士對於「意志」與「決定論」的討論,這些討論涉及了「自由意志」與「宗教信念的知識論」等方面的哲學議題。
