一、 課程說明：
本課程之目的是介紹與討論跟自然律有關的哲學議題；由於自然律一般被認為是科學研究所要發現的主要對象，此觀念與「科學解釋」跟「歸納推論」這兩個重要的科學哲學議題有密切關連，而且此觀念又可連結到「必然性」等模態觀念的討論，對此觀念的釐清與分析顯然是非常基礎且核心的哲學議題。
一九七零年代出現兩個關於「何謂自然律？」的主要哲學立場；第一個是以David Lewis為代表的「系統論者」，根據系統論者：用以組織經驗事實之最佳演繹系統中的公理與定理即是自然律；換言之，自然律只是符合於某些給定條件的規律(regularity)。第二個是以David Armstrong為代表的「共相論者」，共相論者是以「共相之間的必然連結」來刻畫自然律。大多數哲學家都是自然律的實在論者，但是最近有少數主張「沒有自然律」的「反實在論者」對此提出挑戰。最近還有許多「反化約論者」不滿意於「系統論者」與「共相論者」的理論，主張「有自然律」以及「『自然律』觀念無法在不使用法則觀念(nomic concepts)的情況下予以闡明」。
本課程的前九週將會介紹「自然律」觀念的歷史、以及上述幾個關於「自然律」的主要哲學立場，使修課同學對於當代英美哲學界對自然律的討論有大致的了解；最後八週將會檢視當代哲學家Nancy Cartwright對於「自然律」觀念的檢討與看法、以及詮釋美國十九世紀哲學家裴爾士(Charles S. Peirce, 1839-1914)對於「自然律」的主張。Cartwright所挑戰的基礎論(fundamentalism)主張「存有普遍的、具有解釋力的基礎自然律」，她認為我們的科學研究模式不足以支持這種基礎論；至少是因為這種基礎論是科學界與哲學界接受的主流主張，Cartwright的挑戰在今天受到很多的關注。裴爾士的「範疇論」與「極端經院實在論」(extreme scholastic realism)等主張中包含有許多可用以闡明自然律的原創性想法，在了解當代英美哲學界對於自然律的討論之後，或許我們將能夠站在比較有利的位置來解讀裴爾士的想法，並且從中提煉出概念資源來幫助我們回答「何謂自然律？」。
