一、 課程說明(Course Description)

Master & PhD students mentioned here are referred to members in Profs Lyu, Yin, Chan, Sue, Cheng and
Yang's labs.

1. Master students take two semesters of this course within their first four semesters. We encourage one
of the two following situations:

a. New M1 students take Special Topics in Structural Biology and Proteomics I (ST1) in the Fall semester
and the same students take Special Topics in Structural Biology and Proteomics II (ST2) in the Spring
term of her/his M2 year.
b. M1 students take ST2 in the Spring term of her/his M1 year and the same people take ST1 in the Fall
term of their M2 year.

2. PhD students take at least one semester of this course and present their progress in this course every
once a while throughout their PhD study even they do not take this course.

3. For those who take this course - PhD students present first, followed by M2 students and then M1
students.

4. For those who do not take this course - If you still want to present (possibly asked by your advisor),
do the lottery to decide the order of your resentation. You present after the people who take this
course.

6. You are graded according to how you present (90%) and whether or not you frequently raise
questions (10%). A good presenter knows how to explain complicate things in an easy way, which is
achieved by deeply understand the content of your presentation. A good presenter also knows to make
sure she/he understands the questions raised and answer the questions in a logic, understandable and
respectful manner. Follow 'What to present' and 'how to present' below.

1.碩班生在四個學期中至少要修兩個學期,所以是以下三種情況的任一種:
a. 碩一新生選特論一,然後同一學生於碩二下選特論二
b. 碩一下學生選特論二,然後同一學生於碩二上選特論一
c. 碩二上學生選特論一,然後同一學生於碩二下選特論二

2. 鼓勵博班學生在修讀博班期間需修兩個學期這門課,並在不修這門課時擇期於這門課中報告進度。

3. 修課的每個都要報,博班先,再碩二,再碩一,抽籤決定順序。

4. 其他實驗室的人沒修課但是想上台報告的人(請各實驗室的老師給名單)在修課學生之後報告,順序抽籤決定,
不分碩博班。

5. 博士班用英文報,碩士班鼓勵用英文報。

6. 90%的分數依口頭報告的表現決定(包含如何清楚的把複雜的觀念和流程用簡單的方法傳達給聽眾,如何瞭解提
問並回答提問,對所報告課題的瞭解程度); 10%的分數在於提問的頻率和內容。



------------------ What to present ---------------------

You present

1. WHY do you do this research? why is this worth doing? What problems may be solved in your
endeavors? What have been done by other people?

2. HOW do you do your research? Tell people the basics of your Methods - as simple as possible. Please
learn how to present your methods to people who know nothing about your research. Explain your
research to your mom such that she can more or less understand what you are doing.

3. WHAT do you do in this research? WHAT are the results? Do the current results agree with your
hypothesis and pave the way to your improved comprehension to research subjects?

------------------ How to present ----------------------

1. Practice to present something with a logic that people can follow.

2. Understand everything on the slides you are about to present as much as you can.

3. If you understand something deep enough, you can explain complicate things in a simple way (清楚的
把複雜的觀念和流程用簡單的方法傳達給聽眾).

4. Understand the questions raised to you before trying your best to answer them in a respectful manner
(如何瞭解提問並回答提問).

成績考核(Evaluation):
課堂中參與討論 (20%);專題進度報告 (80%)
