一、課程說明(Course Description)
This course is a continuation of Tumor Biology I and/or II (LSMC575300
and/or LSMC575400). Please make sure that you did take the prerequisite prior
to join this class.

In 1863, Prof. Virchow postulated that chronic irritation and previous
injuries are a precondition for tumorigenesis. In 1986, Dr. Dvorak recognized
that the composition of the tumor stroma strongly resembles the granulation
tissue of healing skin wounds and postulated that "tumors are wounds that do
not heal“ in NEJM. In 2011, Dr. Weinberg concluded that in addition to cancer
cells, tumors exhibit another dimension of complexity: they contain a
repertoire of recruited, ostensibly normal cells that contribute to the
acquisition of hallmark traits by creating the "tumor microenvironment“.
Rather than a single cell disease, the system involved in aberrant wounding
and chronic inflammation is also responsible for patients poor outcome.
Although the advances in science are changing what we know about cancer
complexity, there is still no efficient method to differentiate the cancer
attributes between patients. We will discuss the issue in the class.
