Course Description and objectives:
This course aims to acquaint the students with the theory,
terminology, and practical techniques for describing the sounds of English. By
the end of this course, students will:
1. recognize the general mechanisms in producing English consonants and vowels
2. understand the nature of speech sounds at the levels of segments,
syllables, words, and sentences
3. acquire the ability to produce/perceive/transcribe speech sounds correctly
4. realize the sound patterns and peculiarities of English phonetics.

Tentative Schedule:
This course leads the students from basic information regarding the
concepts of phonetics, through the classification of vowels and consonants, to
the suprasegmental phonetic rules, and finally to phonetic context
modifications, syllable structure, and English sounds and spellings.
