一、課程說明(Course Description)

This course is an introduction to the theory of differential equations intended for second or third year
undergraduate students majoring in mathematics. Our aim is to introduce basic concepts, techniques, and
applications of first and second order linear equations. Some methods for nonlinear equations and higher
order systems will be briefly outlined.

Topics to be covered include:
1. First order differential equations
2. Second order linear differential equations
3. Higher order linear differential equations
4. Series solutions
5. Laplace transforms
6. Nonlinear equations and stability
7. Boundary value problems

Except for the introductory chapter, a rough schedule is as follows:

1. First order differential equations (about 8 hours)
2. Second order linear differential equations (about 7 hours)
3. Higher order linear differential equations (about 8 hours)
4. Series solutions (about 6 hours)
5. Laplace transforms (about 4 hours)
6. Nonlinear equations and stability; (about 4 hours)
7. Boundary value problems (about 6 hours)

Method 1: Quizzes/Homework (25%) Three Exams (75%)
Method 2: Each exam worth 1/3 of course grade
