Course Description: Will focus on synthetic skill training and instruction.
Isolation and purification of final products by column chromatography and/or re-
crystallization. proton, carbon-13, 2-D correlation NMR analysis to characterize
the structures. 31P NMR will also be taken.

Text Books: literature references will be give.

Teaching Method: ppt and pdf presentation about the experiments.
Simple demonstration of Chem Draw and Chem 3D and SciFinder search use.

Syllabus:
A total of 4-5 experiments will be carried out, which include the followings:
(1) methyl 2-vinylbenzoate: synthesis and spectroscopic
assignment
(2) diethyl (E)-(2-bromostyryl)phosphonate: synthesis and spectroscopic
assignment
(3) methyl (E)-2-hydroxy-4-phenylbut-3-enoate: synthesis and spectroscopic
assignment
(4) 1,2-diphenylcyclopropan-1-ol: synthesis and spectroscopic assignment
(5) 4,6-bis((4S,5S)-4,5-diphenyl-4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)dibenzo[b,d]furan:
synthesis and spectroscopic assignment

Nucleophilic addition, acyl substitution, nucleophilic substitution, Michael type
conjugate addition, and Claisen condensation reactions will be covered.

Their synthetic steps are attached in a separate pdf file.

Evaluation:

Experimental skills: 60%
Product yield: 40%
Assignment: 100%.

Total 200 points for each experiments.
