(Course Description)
The process of engineering system design, especially involving optical,
mechanical and electrical/electronics sub-systems, is introduced through case
studies and design projects. The objective of this course is for students:
1. To learn about the process of designing a system with multi-disciplinary
subsystems.
2. To learn about designing creative engineering product/solution.
3. To learn about design as a group activity.

Notes:
1. This course requires students to conceptualize, study, design, and make a
model or prototype product in a team within 16 weeks. Students should prepare
to devote at least 12 hours per week, in addition to regular class hours, on the
average, in order to have best learning results. Students who cannot spend 12
hours per week on this course should consider taking it in a different semester.
2. To support the NTHU globalization effort and to offer students an opportunity
of experiencing technical and commercial discussions in English, course 343602
(W3W4F4) will be offered in English. (Major lectures will be delivered in
English. Students are encouraged to use English, but may also use Chinese, in
presentations, discussions and reports.)

(Text Books)
1. D. G. Ullman, "The mechanical design process", 4th ed. McGraw Hill 2010
TJ230.U54 2010 [NTHU lib. has an electronic version.]

(References)
1. Pagan Kennedy, Inventology: How we dream up things that change the world, by
Eamon Dolan/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2016
3. Mechanical Engineering Design, by Shigley. McGraw Hill, 2004

(Teaching Method)
Doing two design projects, discussions, case studies, lectures and
textbooks reading.
-- Design is difficult to teach. The best way of learning is by actually
doing it, with group feedback and guidance.
-- Creativity cannot be taught, but can be cultivated, again, by actually
doing and trying it.
Participations in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions are
encouraged.

(Course Outline)
Introduction: Design Process
Product Discovery (Finding a problem or opportunity, i.e., the need)
Example case studies
Technical Crash Lessons
Project Planning (The plan of work to be taken in the selected application area)
Product Definition (Clarifying the need)
Conceptual Design (Study and preliminary design of possible solutions)
Product Development (Design of the best solution)
Design Project:
Mid-Term project: Remote-control Mobile Robot Ball Game
Term Project: Your own invention/new product

Your own title
(Week 1-5) Problem/Opportunity Identification (Report 1)
(Week 1-9) Project plan (complete work plan) (Report 2)
Prior arts study

(Reports include oral presentations and paper reports. Oral reports will be
held during classes.)
(Additional oral reports/discussions during each report execution stage may be
held in order to help the design progress and will be part of the design process
training.)
(Detailed report content requirements to be announced later.)

(Evaluation)
Term project grade of a student depends on the performance of the student and
his/her group in each stage of the project, the overall quality of all reports
and mutual evaluations of his/her group members. All students must participate in
the final term project presentation and contest.
